Text to Speech
Paste any text and hear it read aloud instantly — free, private, and browser-based with natural voices.
Voice
Voices vary by browser & OS. Chrome has the most options.
Tips
- 🎙️ Best voices: In Chrome, look for "Natural" or "Microsoft" voices for the most human sound.
- ⚡ Speed for learning: 1.3–1.5× is the sweet spot for audiobook-style listening.
- 📱 Mobile: iPhone/iPad voices via Safari are excellent — try "Siri".
- 🔤 Punctuation matters: Well-punctuated text sounds significantly better than raw copy-paste.

Texterfly's Text to Speech tool converts any written text into spoken audio directly in your browser — no account, no app, no paid subscription. It uses the Web Speech API, the same engine that powers voice assistants in Chrome, Edge, and Safari, giving you access to natural-sounding voices without routing your content through any external server.
Paste an article, a document draft, a README, or even a quick note — press Speak and hear it read back to you with live word highlighting, adjustable speed, pitch, and volume. Long texts are automatically split into sentences to avoid the browser TTS timeout bug that silently stops playback on most other free tools.
How to Use the Text to Speech Tool
- Paste or type your text in the input area. Use the preset buttons to load a sample article, a quick voice test, or a longer passage.
- Choose a voice from the dropdown, grouped by language. Click Preview to hear a short sample before committing to a full reading.
- Set the speed with the Speed slider. For relaxed listening use 0.8×; for efficient consumption of long articles, 1.3–1.5× is ideal.
- Press Speak. Words are highlighted in real time as they are spoken. Hit Pause to take a break and Resume to continue from exactly where you left off.
- Adjust Pitch and Volume under the Settings panel if you need further customization. Click Reset to defaults to return to neutral values.
Features That Set This Tool Apart
Live Word Highlighting
Follow along as each word is highlighted in real time, synced to the speech output. Useful for proofreading, reading comprehension, and learning.
Sentence Chunking (No Cutoff)
Chrome's built-in TTS stops silently after ~15 seconds on long texts. Our tool splits your text into sentences and queues them sequentially — any length of text plays to the end.
Voice Preview
Hear a quick sample of any voice before committing. No need to play your full text just to discover the voice isn't right.
Estimated Duration
The header shows how long it will take to read your text at the selected speed. Useful for gauging article length or preparing timed presentations.
Pause & Resume
Pause mid-sentence and resume exactly where you left off — the browser maintains state while paused, so you never lose your place.
100% Private
Your text never leaves your browser. The Web Speech API processes audio locally — nothing is sent to Texterfly's servers or any third-party TTS service.

What Is the Web Speech API?
The Web Speech API is a browser standard that exposes two capabilities: speech synthesis (text-to-speech) and speech recognition (speech-to-text). This tool uses the SpeechSynthesis interface, which is built into Chrome, Edge, Safari, and most modern browsers without any plugin or installation.
Unlike paid TTS services (Amazon Polly, Google Cloud TTS, ElevenLabs), the Web Speech API is completely free and processes speech on-device — which means zero latency, zero cost, and zero data leaving your machine. The trade-off is that voices are limited to what your browser and OS provide, and audio cannot be exported as a file.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my text stop speaking before it finishes?
This is a known Chrome bug — the browser silently kills speech synthesis after about 15 seconds. Our tool works around it by splitting your text into sentences and queuing them one after another, so any length of text plays completely.
Can I download the audio as an MP3?
The Web Speech API does not expose raw audio data, so direct download is not available in a browser-only tool. To capture the audio, use your OS screen recorder (Windows Game Bar, macOS QuickTime) while the tool plays.
Which voices sound the most natural?
On Windows + Chrome, Microsoft's "Natural" voices (Aria, Jenny, Guy) are excellent neural voices. On macOS, the enhanced Siri and "Samantha" voices are very natural. On Android, Google US English voices are consistently clear.
How many characters can I paste?
There is no hard limit. The sentence-chunking system handles texts of any length. The estimated duration counter helps you gauge how long the reading will take.
Does this work for languages other than English?
Yes. The voice picker groups all available voices by language. The exact languages available depend on your browser and OS — Chrome on Windows typically offers voices for 20+ languages.
