FAQ schema markup is structured data added to a webpage that tells Google the page contains frequently asked questions with answers. When eligible, Google may display these as expandable dropdowns directly in search results.

Free FAQ Schema Generator — Create FAQPage JSON-LD for Google Rich Results

This FAQ Schema Generator creates valid FAQPage JSON-LD structured data markup — the format Google recommends for FAQ rich results. Add your questions and answers, see a live preview of exactly how the expandable dropdown will look in Google search results, and copy the complete <script> block to paste into your page.

The tool validates your schema against Google's eligibility requirements — checking for empty answers, disallowed HTML tags, and potentially commercial content that Google may reject. Use Bulk Import to paste Q&A content from an existing document and convert it to schema in seconds.

For other schema types — Article, Product, Review, Organization, LocalBusiness — use the Schema Markup Generator.

FAQ Schema Best Practices

✅ Match the on-page content exactly

Every question and answer in your schema must appear visibly on the page. Google penalizes hidden schema that doesn't reflect actual page content.

✅ Use 4–8 focused questions

Google typically displays 2–3 FAQ items expanded by default. Include 4–8 high-value questions that directly answer common user queries about the page's topic.

✅ Write complete answers

Each answer should be complete and standalone — users clicking from the SERP FAQ dropdown may not read the full page, so the answer must make sense on its own.

✅ Use plain text or minimal HTML

Answers support <br>, <ul>, <li>, <a>, <p>, <b>, <i>, and a handful of other tags. Avoid <script>, <style>, <form>, or any tags not in Google's allowed list.

❌ Avoid promotional content

Questions like "Why should I buy from you?" or answers containing "Buy now", "Limited time offer", or discount codes may cause Google to reject the rich result.

❌ Don't use FAQ schema for ads

FAQ rich results are intended for genuine informational content. Using them purely for promotional messaging violates Google's structured data guidelines and risks a manual penalty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FAQ schema still work in 2025?

Yes. Google restricted FAQ rich results in September 2023, limiting full expandable dropdowns to government and health websites for general queries. For most websites, FAQ rich results now appear primarily for navigational (brand-name) searches. Despite this, adding FAQ schema is still recommended — it provides structured data signals and may still trigger rich results for specific query types.

How do I test my FAQ schema after adding it?

Use Google's Rich Results Test at search.google.com/test/rich-results. Paste your page URL and it shows whether Google can parse the FAQPage schema and whether it is eligible for rich results. Also check Google Search Console's Enhancements → FAQ section after the page is indexed.

Can I have multiple FAQPage schemas on one page?

No — Google's guidelines specify one FAQPage schema per page. If you have multiple FAQ sections, combine all questions into a single FAQPage schema with one mainEntity array.

What is the difference between JSON-LD and Microdata for FAQ schema?

JSON-LD is a separate <script> block in the page head or body — it doesn't touch your visible HTML. Microdata uses HTML attributes (itemscope, itemprop) directly on your existing content elements. Google recommends JSON-LD because it's easier to add, test, and maintain without modifying your HTML structure.

How many FAQ questions should I include in the schema?

Include 4–8 questions. Google typically shows 2–3 items expanded in the SERP and collapses the rest. More than 8–10 questions rarely provides additional SERP value and may signal low-quality keyword stuffing. Focus on questions that genuinely address what users search for on that specific page.

Need Other Schema Types?

The Schema Markup Generator covers Article, Product, Review, Organization, LocalBusiness, HowTo, BreadcrumbList, and more — all with JSON-LD output.
