Order of Operations (BODMAS / PEMDAS)

This calculator follows the standard mathematical order of operations — the same rules your teacher calls BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) or PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction).

# Examples

2 + 3 × 4 = 14 (not 20 — multiplication first)

(2 + 3) × 4 = 20 (brackets first)

2 ^ 3 + 1 = 9 (exponent first: 8 + 1)

sin(30) + cos(60) = 1 (both = 0.5 in DEG mode)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use this calculator on an iPad?
Open the page in Safari or Chrome on your iPad. The calculator is fully touch-optimised with large buttons designed for finger input. Simple mode shows a 4-column layout with extra-tall keys. Rotate to landscape for a wider view.
What is the difference between Simple and Scientific mode?
Simple mode gives you the four arithmetic operations, percentage, and sign toggle — everything most people need day-to-day. Scientific mode adds trigonometric functions, logarithms, factorial, power functions, brackets, memory, and constants.
How do I calculate a percentage?
Press a number then the % button. For example: 200 × 15% = gives 30. Or just type 15% to get 0.15. The % button divides by 100.
Does this calculator work offline?
Once the page has loaded, all calculations run entirely in your browser with no server calls, so it works without an internet connection as long as the page remains open.
How do I use trig functions?
Switch to Scientific mode, select DEG or RAD with the DEG button, press sin/cos/tan, type the angle, and press =. Example: sin(30) in DEG returns 0.5. For inverse functions, press 2nd first to shift sin to sin⁻¹.
What does the 2nd button do?
The 2nd (shift) button in Scientific mode activates alternative functions on some keys: sin becomes sin⁻¹ (arcsine), cos becomes cos⁻¹, tan becomes tan⁻¹, log becomes log₂, ln becomes eˣ, and √ becomes x².
How do I use memory functions?
MS stores the current number to memory. MR recalls it into your expression. M+ adds the current number to what's already in memory. MC clears memory. A yellow M indicator appears at the top when memory is in use.
Can I type directly using my keyboard?
Yes. Numbers, +, −, *, /, (, ), ., ^ all work from the keyboard. Press Enter or = to calculate, Backspace to delete the last character, and Escape to clear everything.
How do I calculate 2 to the power of 10?
In Simple mode, type 2^10 using your keyboard and press Enter. In Scientific mode, press 2 then xʸ then 10 then =. Both give 1024.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no limits, no account, and no subscription.
