Buy me a coffeeFree Random Team Generator — Balanced Groups from Any List
This Random Team Generator uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle — a proven, unbiased algorithm — to split any list of names into fair, balanced teams. Unlike simple "divide the list in order" tools, every possible team arrangement is equally likely, and team sizes are automatically balanced so no group ends up with two fewer people than another.
Add "keep apart" rules to prevent friend groups or coworkers from the same department landing on the same team, or "keep together" rules to preserve pre-formed duos. Need just one random winner instead of teams? Try the Random List Picker. Need placeholder names to test with? Use the Random Name Generator.
Who Uses a Random Team Generator?
PE Teachers
Quickly split a class into fair teams for sports or activities without playing favorites — students trust a random shuffle more than manual picks.
Hackathon Organizers
Paste your registrant list and split into balanced project teams in seconds. Use keep-apart rules to spread out people from the same company.
Trivia Night Hosts
Randomly assign teams for pub quiz or trivia night, ensuring groups stay evenly sized as people arrive.
Team Building Events
HR and team leads use random team generators to mix departments for icebreakers and workshops, breaking up existing cliques.
Sports Coaches
Split a roster into scrimmage teams fairly, or use keep-apart rules to separate players who shouldn't compete against friends.
Classroom Projects
Assign students to group projects randomly and fairly, with the option to keep certain students apart if needed.
How the Balancing Algorithm Works
The tool first shuffles the full name list using Fisher-Yates — the standard algorithm for producing a truly random, unbiased permutation. It then calculates team sizes using integer division: for N people split into K teams, each team gets ⌊N/K⌋ people, and the remainder is distributed one extra person at a time to the first few teams — so 10 people into 3 teams becomes 4-3-3, never 4-4-2 or 5-3-2.
| People | Teams | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 3 | 4, 3, 3 |
| 9 | 3 | 3, 3, 3 |
| 7 | 4 | 2, 2, 2, 1 |
| 13 | 4 | 4, 3, 3, 3 |
| 8 | 5 | 2, 2, 2, 1, 1 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the tool ensure teams are actually fair?
It uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle to randomize name order — a mathematically unbiased algorithm where every possible arrangement is equally likely. Team sizes are then balanced so the largest and smallest teams never differ by more than one person.
Can I prevent certain people from being on the same team?
Yes. Add a "keep apart" rule between two names in the Rules panel. The generator will re-shuffle those specific people onto different teams while keeping everything else random.
What if my rules conflict and can't all be satisfied?
The tool attempts up to 200 swap operations per rule. If a rule genuinely can't be satisfied (for example, too many "keep apart" rules with too few teams), it's clearly flagged after generation so you can adjust your settings.
Should I use "Number of Teams" or "People per Team"?
Use Number of Teams when you know exactly how many groups you need. Use People per Team when you have an ideal group size in mind (like hackathon teams of 4) and want the tool to calculate how many teams that produces.
Is this free with no account needed?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser — your name list is never sent to a server.
