Reading Dice Notation
Tabletop games describe dice rolls in a standard shorthand: NdX means "roll N dice, each with X sides." So 3d6 means roll three six-sided dice and add them together, while 1d20 means roll a single twenty-sided die. Add a flat number afterward for a modifier — 1d20 + 5 means roll one d20 and add 5 to the result. This calculator's pool builder produces exactly this kind of formula, and shows both the individual dice and the final total.
🎲 Mix dice freely
Add any combination of d4 through d100 to the same pool, along with a flat modifier, and roll them all at once.
🔁 Reroll a single die
Click any settled die face to reroll just that one — handy for reroll mechanics some games use.
Understanding Advantage & Disadvantage
Advantage
Roll two d20s and keep the higher result. Used when circumstances favor you — like attacking a prone enemy in melee.
Disadvantage
Roll two d20s and keep the lower result. Used when circumstances work against you — like attacking while blinded.
They don't stack
Under standard 5e rules, having advantage and disadvantage at the same time cancels out — you just roll normally.
Ability scores
The 4d6-drop-lowest method (roll four d6, discard the lowest, sum the rest) is the most common way tables generate starting ability scores, producing a range roughly between 3 and 18.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this dice roller truly random?
It uses your browser's standard pseudorandom number generator, which is more than sufficient for games — each face has an equal, independent chance of coming up. It isn't cryptographically secure, so it isn't meant for anything beyond gaming and casual decisions.
Can I roll dice with a modifier, like 1d20 + 5?
Yes — add your dice to the pool, then enter any flat number in the modifier field. It's added to the total automatically.
Can I mix different dice types in one roll?
Yes. Add as many different dice types as you want to the pool — for example 2d6 plus 1d20 — and roll them together in a single click.
What does "4d6 drop lowest" mean for ability scores?
It means rolling four six-sided dice, discarding the single lowest result, and adding the remaining three together. It's the most common method tabletop groups use to generate starting character ability scores.
Does this work for board games other than D&D?
Yes — the pool builder supports any combination of dice, so it works just as well for Yahtzee, Catan, Risk, or any game that calls for standard polyhedral or six-sided dice.
