Based on GitHub's official gitignore template collection. Nothing about your project is uploaded — everything is generated locally in your browser.

Free .gitignore Generator

A missing or incomplete .gitignore file is how node_modules, build output, API keys, and OS junk files like .DS_Store end up committed to a repository. This tool builds a correct, deduplicated .gitignore file from GitHub's own official templates — pick every technology in your stack, and it merges them into one file instantly, ready to drop into your project before your first commit.

What Should Be in a .gitignore File?

📦 Dependencies

Folders like node_modules/, vendor/, or .venv/ — these are reinstalled from a lockfile, so committing them just bloats the repo.

🏗️ Build output

Compiled or bundled output like dist/, build/, .next/, or target/ — generated automatically and shouldn't be hand-edited or version-controlled.

🔑 Secrets & environment files

.env files and similar often hold API keys or credentials. Keep an .env.example checked in instead, with real values kept local only.

🖥️ OS & editor junk

Files like .DS_Store (macOS), Thumbs.db (Windows), and .idea/ or .vscode/ (editors) are personal to your machine, not your project.

Already Committed Something You Shouldn't Have?

Adding a .gitignore file only stops new, untracked files from being added — it won't remove files Git is already tracking. If something like node_modules/ or an .env file was committed before you added your .gitignore, untrack it first:

git rm -r --cached node_modules
git commit -m "Remove node_modules from tracking"

If a secret was committed and pushed, treat it as compromised — rotate the credential, don't just delete it from history and assume it's safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this .gitignore generator free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no limit on how many files you generate.

Where do the templates come from?

The core language and platform templates are based on GitHub's official, community-maintained gitignore template collection, the same source used by GitHub's own repository creation flow.

Can I combine multiple stacks, like Node and Python?

Yes. Select as many templates as you need and they'll be merged into a single file, with duplicate rules automatically removed.

Does React or Vue have its own template?

React, Vue, Next.js, and Nuxt projects are all Node.js-based, so selecting the Node.js template covers them — it already includes their common build output folders.

What if a file is already tracked by Git?

A .gitignore file only affects untracked files. If something like node_modules was already committed before adding your .gitignore, you'll need to remove it from Git's tracking separately (for example with git rm -r --cached), then commit again.

Does it save or upload my project?

No — this only generates a text file from templates you select. Nothing about your project or code is uploaded anywhere.
