Understanding Currency Exchange Rates

This currency converter uses the mid-market rate — the real rate used between banks, free of any markup. The rate you receive at a bank, airport, or exchange bureau will always be worse than this, because they add a spread (their profit margin).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mid-market exchange rate?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies on the global market. It's the rate banks use to trade with each other — without any markup. This is the rate this tool shows. Banks and exchange bureaus add a spread on top, which is why the rate they offer you is always worse.
What is the difference between bid and ask price?
The bid price is what a currency dealer will buy currency from you for. The ask price is what they will sell it to you for. The difference between these two prices is the bid-ask spread — the dealer's profit margin. The mid-market rate sits between these two prices.
How often do exchange rates update?
Global currency markets trade 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. This tool fetches the latest available rate from open.er-api.com each time you change the base currency. For the most volatile pairs, rates can change by fractions of a percent every few minutes during trading hours.
What is the best way to exchange currency for travel?
For the best rates: (1) Use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. (2) Withdraw cash from a local ATM on arrival and pay in local currency. (3) Order from your bank a few days before departure. Avoid: airport kiosks and tourist-area exchange bureaus — they typically have the worst rates and highest hidden fees.
Why does the rate I get from my bank differ from this tool?
Banks start with the mid-market rate and add their own markup (typically 1–5%). The rate shown here is the mid-market baseline. The difference between our rate and your bank's rate is effectively their fee. Non-bank services like Wise, Revolut, or local ATMs often offer rates much closer to mid-market.
What is dynamic currency conversion (DCC)?
DCC is when a foreign ATM, hotel, or shop offers to charge you in your home currency instead of the local currency. Always decline — DCC rates are typically 3–7% worse than the mid-market rate. Pay in local currency and let your bank handle the conversion.
How do I convert USD to EUR?
Enter the amount in USD, select USD as the "From" currency and EUR as the "To" currency. The converted amount and the exchange rate appear instantly. The quick conversion table below shows common USD amounts in EUR.
What currencies does this converter support?
